Join Johnny H for an unforgettable 12-day journey through the southern reaches of New Zealand’s South Island, exploring regions and experiences not included on our previous South Island tours. This itinerary ventures further south, taking in places such as Dunedin alongside the dramatic landscapes of Fiordland and the energy of Queenstown.
A major highlight of this journey is the strong focus on Lord of the Rings filming locations, a long-standing drawcard for our travellers. From the cinematic scenery around Glenorchy to the wider landscapes that brought Middle-earth to life, this trip offers multiple opportunities to connect with one of New Zealand’s most iconic stories.
Carefully paced with free time built into the schedule, this tour balances must-see sights with quieter moments to rest, making it suitable for most travellers while still delivering a rich and varied South Island experience.
Day 1: Sydney
Arrive in Sydney and check into your hotel for an overnight stay. This evening allows time to settle in, rest after travel, and prepare for an early departure the following morning.
Day 2: Queenstown – Te Anau
Fly from Sydney to Queenstown before continuing by road to Te Anau. The drive introduces you to classic South Island scenery, with lakes, mountains, and open landscapes setting the tone for the journey ahead. The evening is kept relaxed to allow time to unwind.
Day 3: Milford Sound
Travel deep into Fiordland National Park to experience Milford Sound on a scenic boat cruise. Towering cliffs, waterfalls, and the stillness of the fjord create one of the most memorable days of the trip. There is time to absorb the surroundings at an unhurried pace.
Day 4: Te Anau
Visit the Te Anau glowworm caves, travelling underground by boat through limestone caverns illuminated by thousands of glowworms. From here, we hit the road to Dunedin, giving the group a chance to rest and take in the scenery.
Day 5: Dunedin
After a lazy morning, the afternoon sees up head to Larnach Castle, exploring its historic interiors and enjoying elevated views across the Otago Peninsula. The day blends travel with a standout cultural experience.
Day 6: Dunedin
Spend the day on a scenic railway journey departing from Dunedin. This extended rail experience offers a relaxed way to take in changing landscapes, historic engineering, and regional character, with minimal walking required.
Day 7: Dunedin – Queenstown
Drive from Dunedin back to Queenstown, watching the scenery shift from rolling countryside to alpine terrain. After arrival, enjoy a wildlife cruise before settling into accommodation and soaking up the lakeside atmosphere.
Day 8: Glenorchy
Travel to Glenorchy for a dedicated Lord of the Rings–themed tour. Visit filming locations set among mountains, braided rivers, and native forest, with storytelling that brings the films and landscapes together. This is a standout day for fans of the series.
Day 9: Queenstown
Enjoy panoramic views from the Queenstown gondola, looking out over Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding peaks. For those who wish, the luge offers an optional activity, while others may prefer to relax, explore town, or enjoy the views.
Day 10: Queenstown
A flexible day with time for souvenir shopping and independent exploration. For those seeking a burst of excitement, an optional jet boat experience is available. The remainder of the day is free to enjoy Queenstown at your own pace.
Day 11: Queenstown
Visit a local wildlife park to learn about native species, followed by glow-in-the-dark golf for a fun, social group activity. This lighter day provides an easy and enjoyable lead-in to the journey’s conclusion.
Day 12: Queenstown – Sydney
Fly from Queenstown back to Sydney, concluding the tour with lasting memories of New Zealand’s southern landscapes.
